In April, 1975, we fled Saigon with the fall of Vietnam. We are my parents, their nine children, one son-in-law, my grandparents, and three grandchildren. We fled by naval ship and landed in Guam. From Guam we were transferred by sea to Camp Pendelton near Los Angeles. I do not consider Camp Pendelton America, as it was an isolated sea of tents hidden from the outside world. This was my no man's land, a place in between my old home and my future home.
Several months at Camp Pendelton, we received sponsorship. We were lucky. A family of this size faced many rejections. Because we were one of very few Catholics in a majority Buddhist culture, we achieved sponsorship with the help of the Catholic church and community in Sacramento.
My first flight was from Camp Pendelton to Sacramento. It was my entry into America, where I now call my home.
